- Field Corn Pad
A 64-year-old female presented for evaluation of a rash on her lower back of several months’ duration that was asymptomatic. She has had long-standing low back pain.
This patient was using a “field corn pad” to relieve her lower back pain.
- Space Heater
A healthy 25-year-old female presented for evaluation of an asymptomatic eruption on both lower legs of 1 to 2 months duration. There is no history of trauma. She has been on the same birth control pill for the last 5 years.
She gives no history of cold intolerance or sensitivity. She works as a bank teller.
- Heating Pad
Increased pigmentation on her lower back is noted by a 38-year-old woman who has used a heating pad for several months for low back pain.
- Laptop
An 11-year-old boy is referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic rash on his anterior thighs. The macular, partially blanching, erythematous to slightly tan, reticulated rash began 2 months earlier and involved the left thigh more than the right.
The child has had no medical illnesses and is not taking any medications. He is an active and social child, although much of his socializing he admits is done on his laptop, which he uses every day sometimes for several hours at a time.
- Heating Pad
An 88-year-old woman with a history of senile cardiac amyloidosis was seen in the cardiology clinic for heart failure. During the visit, she reported that she had had persistent pain along the lumbo-sacral region, but more recently pruritus had developed. She had been using a heating pad for symptomatic relief.
