Dr Blumberg identified the hepatitis B virus and created the first vaccine to prevent infection with the virus, according to the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute. The vaccine became the first “anti-cancer” vaccine since it prevented chronic hepatitis B virus infection and liver cancer. Dr Blumberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1976 for his discovery of the virus.
