ACIP Releases 2023 Adult Immunization Schedule
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has released its 2023 immunization schedule for adults aged 19 years or older in the United States. For the first time, the schedule includes information regarding COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.
The vaccination schedule breaks down the recommended vaccines by age group, need for additional vaccines by medical conditions, vaccine types (frequencies, intervals, considerations), and contraindications and precautions of each vaccine type.
Notable changes to the Adult Immunization Schedule include:
- A Notes section dedicated to COVID-19 vaccine recommendations featuring hyperlinks to assist physicians in recommending COVID-19 booster doses to patients in addition to the current COVID-19 schedule and the use of COVID-19 preexposure prophylaxis;
- new recommendations for pneumococcal vaccinations, including those for both the 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in patients who previously received pneumococcal vaccines;
- an added segment in the Notes section regarding polio that recommends the polio vaccine booster for adults who received the three-dose vaccine but are at risk for infection; and
- a newly licensed hepatitis B vaccine in the description of the three-dose series. Additionally, the hepatitis B section language was changed to state that people aged 60 years and older with known risk factors for the virus should complete the vaccine series.
The updated Adult Immunization Schedule was also approved by the director of the CDC, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the American Academy of Physician Associates the American Pharmacists Association and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
