E-Cigarette Use Increases Risk of Prediabetes

The use of e-cigarettes is associated with a greater risk of prediabetes, according results of a recent study.1

Researchers utilized data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey conducted from 2016 to 2018. A total of 600,046 individuals who completed the prediabetes and e-cigarette modules were included in this analysis. Of the participants, 28.6% were aged older than 35 years, 50.4% were women, 67.7% were non-Hispanic White, and 12.2% were non-Hispanic Black.

The prevalence of prediabetes was 9.0% among current e-cigarette users, 5.9% among sole e-cigarette users, and 10.2% among dual users (both e-cigarettes and combustible-cigarettes). The odds ratio for prediabetes in the fully adjusted model were 1.22 (95% CI, 1.10--1.37) for current users, 1.12 (95% CI, 1.05--1.19) for former users, 1.54 (95% CI, 1.17--2.04) for sole e-cigarette users, and 1.14 (95% CI, 0.97--1.34) for sole e-cigarette users when compared with those who never use e-cigarettes.

“Our study demonstrated a clear association of prediabetes risk with the use of e-cigarettes,” study author Shyam Biswal, PhD, concluded in a press release.2 “With both e-cigarette use and prevalence of prediabetes dramatically on the rise in the past decade, our discovery that e-cigarettes carry a similar risk to traditional cigarettes with respect to diabetes is important for understanding and treating vulnerable individuals.”
