The Benefits of Digital Pathology

“Pathology has been done in the same way for the past 150 years: a human looking at tissue under a microscope,” says David West, Jr., CEO and Founder of Proscia, a company providing digital pathology solutions. Scanning conventional slides to produce high-resolution digital images -- known as whole slide imaging -- is opening a new realm of digital pathology. Digital images can be sent anywhere in the world for second opinions, the files can theoretically be stored indefinitely, and computer algorithms can quantify images for research and potentially diagnosis. As the glass slide is replaced by a digital image on a computer screen, the result may be better productivity and patient care.
