Magnetic Device Alleviates GERD Symptoms
The LINX Reflux Management System, a flexible ring of magnets placed around the lower esophagus, has been shown to provide effective, long-term control of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to remove the need for daily reflux medication in 79% of patients, according to the results of a recent study.
The device, placed during a minimally invasive procedure, expands when eating and contracts to prevent stomach acid from flowing into the esophagus.
The researchers conducted a single-center retrospective study involving 335 patients who underwent magnetic sphincter augmentation with LINX between 2007 and 2020. Of the patients, 124 had had the device for at least 6 years and up to 12 years. Overall, 90% of patients with implanted LINX had a greater than 50% improvement in GERD quality of life score and the discontinuation of proton pump inhibitors. Device removal due to continued symptoms, dysphagia, or the need for an MRI occurred in 3 patients.
“The efficacy of the LINX System remained strong and the risk of complications did not increase many years after implantation. Based on these results and the high levels of patient satisfaction, MSA may represent a true paradigm shift that has the potential to fill the current therapy gap in GERD,” said Luigi Bonavina, MD, professor of surgery at the University of Milan School of Medicine and chief of the Department of Surgery at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato.
