Preoperative Clearance Exam: Making it Practical and Useful
The purpose of the preoperative evaluation is to help guide informed consent for surgical risk and surgical options, determine whether a patient is at their optimal condition prior to the procedure, and to develop a plan to prevent complications, including putting together a plan for chronic medications, according to Barbara Jo McGarry, MD, who is presenting a session on the preoperative clearance exam for the Practical Updates in Primary Care 2022 Virtual Series.
Dr McGarry is an Associate Professor and Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Family Medicine Residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She is presenting a session entitled “Preoperative Clearance Exam – Making it Practical and Useful” for the Practical Updates in Primary Care 2022 Virtual Series.
The learning objectives during Dr McGarry’s presentation on the preoperative clearance exam include:
- Identifying risks specific to the patient and the operative procedure
- Identifying a useful preoperative testing approach
- Providing a tailored preoperative medication management approach
“[The preoperative clearance exam] is all about risk,” Dr McGarry said during her presentation. “Risk comes in two forms: The risk of a surgery and the risk towards the individual patient.”
