Alopecia in a Primary Care Setting
Alopecia can have a significant negative impact on a patient’s quality of life, so it is important to understand its clinical features. The term alopecia is not a diagnosis, instead, it is an umbrella term for different diagnoses that all cause hair loss, according to Britt Craiglow, MD, who is presenting a session on alopecia at Practical Updates in Primary Care 2022 Virtual Series.
“Unfortunately, a lot of patients who have hair loss often feel dismissed by health care providers,” Dr Craiglow said.
Dr Craiglow is an adjunct associate professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. She is presenting a session titled “Alopecia for Primary Care” at Practical Updates in Primary Care 2022 Virtual Series.
The learning objectives during Dr Craiglow’s presentation on alopecia include:
- List potential causes of hair loss
- Describe the clinical features of different types of alopecia
- Identify patients for whom specialty referral is indicated
Early identification and treatment are important, especially for scarring alopecias, Dr Craiglow noted.
