New Approaches to Prevent and Treat Cardiometabolic Risk - Editor's Note

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to read this special issue on cardiometabolic risk—which includes obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. This disease state affects more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States and primary care practitioners are increasingly playing key roles in the diagnoses and treatment of these patients.

In this issue, you will find the latest data from 2 major cardiovascular trials—TECOS and ELIXA—that was presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 75th Scientific Sessions (page 2). The Diabetes Q+A column delves into the usefulness of insulin pumps in the management of diabetes (page 4), while “Improving Insulin Adherence” looks at factors that might impede insulin adherence (page 12). “Diabetes Self-Management Education Underused” summarizes the new position statement and algorithm for referrals in diabetes self-management education and support and the role diabetes educators can play in helping the patient (page 5). Our photo essay (page 8) puts a face on the impact of cardiometabolic syndrome. “CVD Risk Factors in Women with Diabetes” focuses on taking risk factors (eg, hypertension and glycemic control) into account when selecting the right treatment regiment for women (page 14) and “Treating Diabetic Neuropathy” looks at the role of nutraceuticals, diet, and exercise in combination with a prescribed regimen to treat diabetic neuropathy (page 15). And finally, this special Top Papers of the Month looks at alternative treatments when metformin is not an option for patients with type 2 diabetes (page 16).

This special issue is a small step in better understanding this prevalent condition. Please visit www.consultant360.com to sign up for daily e-news delivered to your inbox and while you are there, visit our Diabetes, Cardiometabolic Risk, and Nutrition Medical Resource Centers.
